I have been planning a teerth yatra - covering about 5 places by train. This yatra is actually food related. 5 different food items (vegetarian or egg) in 5 different cities in the southern half of India (note I didn't say south India).
Assuming one starts from Chennai, the places to cover are Rajamundry (in Telengana, erstwhile Andhra), Kolkata, Nasik, Mumbai, Davangere (Karnataka).
I can personally vouch for each of the dishes (except the one in Rajamundry) in the respective eateries in the various cities - I have at various points in the past eaten at these places and let out many a satisfied burp.
- The first stop Rajamundry is apparently known for its wonderful chili (ooty milagai) bajjis. One can take any train going (from Chennai) to Kolkata to reach Rajamundry.
- Egg rolls are quite common anywhere in Kolkata but I would recommend a hotel Nizam near Esplanade and New Market (between Globe and Elite theaters).
- The next place is Bharat Cold Drink House (Howson Road, Devlali) near Nashik. They make awesome cutlet and Kulfi. To reach Nasik / Devlali, one can take any train from Kolkata to Mumbai via Nagpur. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRHiOlcYvDQ
- From Nasik, go to Dadar (West) station in Mumbai. Locate Sri Krishna hotel just on the west side Dadar (W) station.
- From Mumbai go to Davanagere for a delicacy known as Benna Dosa. You get it in a shop opposite CODS (College of Dental Sciences) in Davanagere. Benna Dosa is a variety of dosa made with a lot of Benna (butter).
Note that each of these dishes costs only Rs 30 or Rs 40. And you cannot eat more than 3 or 4 of any of the dishes at a time.
But I tell you, it's worth going on this Teerth Yatra. Heavenly.
