Men's Salary And Women's Sentences

I was talking to a friend when I was reminded of an article I read recently (not exactly this but something similar https://journalistsresource.org/studies/government/criminal-justice/courts-lenient-sentencing-bond-women- about women being given lighter sentences than men by judges because women also have other responsibilities at home, such as child care, which mostly men don't. The author, a woman herself, was talking about the system in UK. She felt it wasn't right that women should be given lighter sentences for the same crime. And I thought how true.

And then I thought of all the brouhaha about men getting higher salary than women for the same job that a woman does. And that there should be equality
Did anyone think about the extra money that men have to spend - in gifts, alimony or generally shoulder a higher expense than women.

And whether I ever dealt with (thought about) that issue the same way as the UK legal issue with respect to gender.
Just as I never empathized with women's lighter sentences, I had never thought men should be given higher salary than women for the same job.

That's (absence of) F you see. We can imagine a woman or a group crusading for women campaigning  for lesser sentences for women for the reason mentioned. Would we ever see anyone champion a men's group for higher men's wages? Men might use other reasons (legitimate?) for handing themselves higher salary in comparison to women. They will be surreptitious about it and won't let on that they ate doing it. They may feel entitled to it but still shamefaced about it. Like cheating on tax. But to come out in the open and say that they deserved higher pay because of gender related reasons. - that will be the day when we see men doing it.

As in most other blog posts I am generalising about  the entities involved,  in this case,  men and women - not necessarily applicable to every individual man and woman.

How NTJ Evaluate People

A friend of mine told me about her son who made a rather cynical remark about a group of people as being not worthy of his attention. (He was referring to girls and specifically to their yakkety yakkety yak).

I explained to her how INTJ / ENTJ (as in MBTI) evaluate people.

The way he judges anyone he knows or anyone close to him is by evaluating what they say or do:
1. Are you consistent (if not out go P's)
2. Are you rational? Do you mean what you say? Do you do (practice) what you say (preach)? (Out go F's)
3. Is your act good and responsible?
4. Did you say anything I didn't know -Something that was wow?.  If you tell him about accessories available @66% discount on Amazon - even if he didn't know - it doesn't count as wow. (Out go S).

If you are an XSXP,  don't go anywhere near such boys. They might appreciate you if you had the sense to avoid them.

Making A Scene

A friend of mine asked me about people who create a scene. How come some of us do while others hate it. This was her question. ..

Extroverts make a scene often. EF (Extroverted Feelers as in MBTI) do it deliberately.. ET do it unknowingly. That leaves IT (Introverted Thinkers) and IF.  IF probably calculate and and do something to blow things up.. But being introvert, they don't do it often.

IT also blow up infrequently but as in ET it's more a loss of control than a deliberate action. The effect is still the same,  the reason notwithstanding.

As i was telling a friend yday, the feminine way to disparage another person is to say "you look so nice TODAY" with a voice emphasis on the capitalized word. The male way to disparage is rather overt and obvious.

The summary is F do it using S2 (conscious thought). T do it using S1 (subconscious).

Coming to why introverts don't prefer to create a scene: An introvert doesn't like to express.

That leads to the logical question. Why don't introverts like to express?

By the age of 3 we gave "decided" to be I or E.
Why does someone decide to be or become I? Maybe a secretive nature (ever seen an introvert who divulges everything?). Maybe very shy. Low self esteem? - I am not sure. Many introverts do not have low self esteem.

I think introverts have a general preference to stay hidden from the public.  Which is not the same as being feminine which is to not make a scene or to ask questions in a meeting.. This nature is a part of sizing up the environment.  The "not creating a scene" which women have in a new environment is a decision of S2. To preserve appearances.

While for introverts,  not creating a scene is a decision of S1 and subconscious.

Think of a matrix like this
                                      T                                          F
Extrovert            creates scene                  creates scene
                               innocently often        deliberately often

Introvert                hates to                        hates to create
                               create scene.              scene but plans
                               Occasional bouts        plans subtle
                               of anger                         scenes

This is not to say T are great and F aren't. T have their own problems.

Summary :
The question is not about making a scene. The real question is why is one an introvert.

What Are We Possessive About

While discussing with a friend, the question of possessiveness arose.  Some people believe that they don't stoop down to the level of being possessive.  Some may also be or even think of themselves to be generous. Like Karna in Mahabharata.

It is my position that even Karna can be possessive. Let's see how.

I posit that each of us considers something in our life to be PM (very precious and scarce such as Precious Metal in ore). What is PM for you may be one thing and very different from what is PM for me.  For you it could be your children,  for me it could be Aishwarya Rai, for another it could be her freedom to do what she wants without being restrained and so on.

And I say that when it comes to letting go of our PM, each of us is terribly possessive.

Coming to Karna  what was his PM? It wasn't his wealth, it wasn't his Kavach Kundal (which he gave away to Indra despite knowing that by giving it he would be killed soon). I think his PM was Duryodhan and hence applying the rule mentioned earlier, he would hate to let go of Duryodhan or share Duryodhan with anyone else that would result in a lower share of Duryodhan for Karan.

What say?

Minimize The Effluent To Be Stored Inside Factory

Assuming you have 100 kg of dilute ore (containing very small amounts of precious metal = PM), how do we determine the weight of ore to be disposed of and balance retained inside the factory? The ore is not homogeneous meaning the concentration of PM is not same in each kg of ore.
More information about the problem:
  1. The cost of disposing the entire ore: More the weight disposed of, higher would be the cost - unlike leather waste disposed indiscriminately into Ganges in UP at nominal cost. Let's assume that in our factory any amount of effluents are allowed to be discharged but at a cost which is unknown but not nominal.
  2. The opposing cost is the pain of holding the ore inside the factory (stink from the non-PM part of ore): Less the amount disposed of outside the factory, more is the amount held inside the factory causing damage to various entities inside the factory because of the stink.
  3. There is a monthly subsidy provided to the factory for holding the ore within the factory and this provides some revenue. The subsidy cost per kg is independent of the PM content in each kg of ore.
While the price of ore mentioned in point 3 is known accurately,  the effluent cost mentioned in point 1 and the holding cost of ore mentioned in point 2 are known only in qualitative terms and not in dollar terms.

Since all three costs are not known in dollar terms, the solution also will be subjective. I would first identify the PM content in each kg of ore.

Now we have to remind ourselves that the goal of the exercise is not to maximize the subsidy received for the ore,  rather it is to minimize the ore stored inside the factory.

Now, I have already got the PM in each kg of the ore. I would now sort the ore in increasing order of PM content. The ore with the lowest PM content gets the same subsidy per kg but stinks the most.

While inspecting the sample data (say in Excel),use your judgment to determine which of the worst samples to discharge out (and balance kept inside). This is strictly subjective as mentioned earlier because of lack of cost data for points 1,2.

Estimate that you will send 20kg out of 100kg out and see whether samples 19,20 are similar and that samples 21,22 are similar and that 20,21 are dissimilar in PM content. If this condition is met, then samples 1-20 should be discharged outside. If the condition is not met,  move to sample 10 or sample 40 and repeat. If the worst n samples are to be discharged outside then samples n, n+1 should be quite distinct in terms of PM content.

Do this until your heart is at ease with the ore size you have determined to discharge.

If there are other considerations in terms of affinity towards certain specific samples handle those appropriately.

The whole job consists of two steps,  typically performed by two different roles.
The first step is to get the PM content for each kg of ore. This can done by the lab chemist.
The second step of deciding which samples to dispose of is a management decision best left to the factory manager.

Mental Health Treatment And Freewill

How does a psychiatrist address mental issues if there is no freewill?

Having no freewill of course doesn't mean that the mind cannot be controlled or channeled. Maybe it becomes easier. It's now only like repairing a machine. A machine behaves predictably. Even if it's not working well a good mechanic can figure out what's wrong and make the necessary repairs and fix it. It's no different (maybe a little more complex) with repairing human beings with mental issues.

Matter of fact if human beings DID have freewill it would be far more difficult to fix their mental issues..

Non-Rational Mirrors

Right now I am interested in any understanding that comes from non-rationality.

So many things become obvious about ourselves when we see the same trait in others (initially we get shocked to see someone exhibits a shocking behavior and then when we introspect, we realize we are similar) or when we experience an event which opens our eyes.

These inferences are not logically deduced but they are like a mirror which shows something like a scar which previously was unseen.

Is there any patten to these mirrors (or events) which explain new stuff to us? They seem to occur at random. Do we have to resign ourselves to getting new understanding without any control over getting more of it? Without being able to schedule it?

Survival Of The Fittest - The Non-T (As In MBTI)

When we don't have faith, when we process thru T, we are ready to consider even very negative consequences. Once we have considered a negative thing, no matter as being very improbable, we start accepting it.. now it's only a question of increasing the probability of the negative event.

On the other hand, if we are F we process through our faith and hence we don't imagine negative things even as being remotely possible. Hence survival is better - we do whatever unimaginable things to prevent or get out of a negative situation.

T, probably because of their ability to consider negative situations, have kinda started accepting it. Hence they are ready to accept more negative things hence perhaps survive lesser.

Difference Between ET And IF

Difference between Extraverted Thinker and Introverted Feeler - both have a high need to relate to people.

The difference being that acquiring new relationships is much more important to an ET while an IF focuses on retaining those few relationships she has.

Non-Standard Behavior And Non-Standard Events - Behavioral Change

All the while I have thought that each person expresses a behavior that is largely static. And the behavior of course is different for each person with some degree of overlap.

Now I am focusing on the behavior that a person exhibits that is very different from their normal behavior.

Examples:
  1. Neerja Bhanot Airhostess during the PAN AM hijacking.
  2. Akshay Kumar in Airlift in Kuwait.
  3. Me in the two train episodes
  4. A normally rational and very calm friend once chased another person with a cricket bat with intention to do bodily harm. What the other person did to provoke this behavior in my friend is a different story.
All of these are non-standard behavior (NSB for short). By NSB I refer to events which happen only once (or twice) in a person's life. People who knew the person will find it very difficult to believe that the person exhibited such NSB.

Now the question is:
What caused these NSB?

How do we predictably make this NSB happen in a person? How do we increase the percentage of desirable NSB in a person?

As I understand,  an NSB is triggered by non-standard events (NSE) in a person's life. Does a specific circumstance create the same NSB in everyone? Answer is No.

Which NSE creates a particular NSB in a person is the question I am trying to answer

A new NSE creates a focus in a person, causes their brain cells to align metaphorically and hence enables a NSB. Why should the NSE create a focus?

Ahmed Khan - Mapping Names To Faces Of Actors

I  was watching the song Leke Pehla Pehla Pyaar from the movie CID and I wondered who the male harmonium player in the video was. Apparently it was Abrar Alvi who was part of Guru Dutt's team. I got Abrar's name from this link: http://www.hindigeetmala.net/song/leke_pahla_pahla_pyar_1.htm. The Wiki link on Alvi also brings up the possibility that it was he who directed the movie Saaheb Biwi Aur Gulaam and not Guru Dutt.

Interestingly in another street song Deewane Hai Deewaanon Ki in the movie Zanjeer, the man with the harmonium was Gulshan Bawra as per https://in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070112020130AAlx9P2

Man Re Tu Kahe Na

I was listening to this song, from the movie Chitralekha (1964, MD: Roshan), last night and today.

The sadness is so nicely expressed in the song just as it is in few other Rafi songs I love - Raha Gardishon Mein (Do Badan) or in Na Kisi Ka Noor Hoon (Laal Quila). Read http://vbala99.blogspot.com/2012/03/raha-gardishon-mein-hardum.html

When others hear songs they listen to the music, the voice, they visualize the scene and also process the lyrics. And also reflect on what they would feel were they in the same position.
They enjoy a song holistically.

Imagine a person like me. I listen only to the song and to the voice. And I fall in love or dislike the song or have a reaction that is something in between. So the song has very less with it (only music and voice ) to reach me.

And yet in these songs, the MD and the singer reach me so fully. I have tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat and empathizing with the singer -  all this without having watched the video and without having a clue about the lyrics. Is the magic in me or in the MD/Singer that this can happen?

Self Pity And Sociopathy

A friend of mine said this to me:
Self pitying people are of two kinds. One with the strong belief that everyone and everything towards them is unjust. I don't think they have a capability to do a rational introspection. They imagine the whole incident the way they want it to be instead of how it actually was. Over a period of time the imagined thought becomes firmly entrenched. They live with that belief. The second kind is capable of a rational introspection. Dealing with the first category is impossible. Did this kind of people behave that way even as kids?

My take:
They (the first kind) may have not done it as kids because Selfpity needs a little introspection ability which kids may not have.
More importantly kids are very resilient and positive and hence they don't stay cooped up in negative thoughts.

But very likely the seeds of self pity - non assertive behavior, ability to introspect, poor self esteem would likely be there even as kids. Difficult to detect at that stage. As its exhibition would be seen by adults as cute than as awful (as self pity).

Another important aspect in case of kids is the presence of parents which is very helpful. As adults we don't have parents playing any strong role in our lives, instead we have critical people around us which helps self pity come out.

Big Talk

I have a friend who loves meeting people and goes out with them often. I asked her what she talks with her friends. Being a nice person,  she listed the topics that come up. Here is the list:
  1. How’s life going
  2. Where we at in terms of getting the deposit in bank
  3. Which area is good
  4. Who is f*****d up in the head now a days in our circle (There is an extra * there but let's not be too fastidious)
  5. Jobs
  6. New stuff that we are looking at
  7. Old times
  8. New plans to go for a holiday
  9. Talking about how crazy our families are
  10. Most importantly when are we meeting next
  11. And what we’re doing that day. She replied that she knew it.
This is the kind of stuff must people talk about. I told her that if anyone talked such things with me I would block / ban them and go back to my cave..And pull the door and lock it after me. Strange how something that is nice to one is abhorrent to another. I am pretty sure the topics that would interest me would be completely boring to my friend and to her friends.

We Do No Have Freewill - Draft Proof

The fact that we can control or guide our own or others' behavior.

We want to quit smoking or eating high calorie diet
We want to quit being nasty to our pesky neighbor.
We successfully take up a new year resolution

In any example where we start with a resolution and control ourselves or others to change behavior - this is an example of presence of free will.

When we start with a conscious and not so easy goal and work towards the goal and achieve it, we definitely believe in our free will and in our ability to achieve what we set out to.

In order to prove the absence of freewill we have to prove that the goal itself didn't come from freewill. Then the goal is like wanting to eat or to procreate - a goal that is set by our subconscious to ourselves over which we don't have control. That we want to do MBBS or want to create the world 100m sprint record - how did we get those goals? Why did we set ourselves such goals? What were we thinking when we set such goals?

What about goals that we follow that someone else set for us.

Can you climb that peak?
Can you go hungry for 4 days?
Can you win the wrestling championship as in the movie Sultan?
Can you improve ghee to 40:1?
You have to study in IIT

When we are given such challenges who decides (which part of our mind ) yes we want to take up?

The question I have is about our goals and our responses to those goals. In that context do we have freewill?
